When a $15 resin kit works — and when it ruins the glass

A hardware-store chip repair kit costs about $15 and, on the right damage, produces a genuinely acceptable repair. On the wrong damage — or with the wrong prep — it can lock contaminants permanently inside the break and turn a $150 professional repair into a $500 replacement. The tests below sort which category your chip falls into.

What a resin repair is actually doing

Every chip on a windshield is a small air pocket between the outer glass ply and the plastic interlayer. Light hitting that pocket scatters, which is why the damage looks silvery-white. A repair works by drawing that air out under vacuum and back-filling the void with an optically clear acrylic resin that has a refractive index close to the surrounding glass. Cure the resin under UV light and the void becomes invisible or nearly so, and the crack stops propagating.

The trick is that the resin has to reach every micro-crack radiating from the impact point. Any pocket left with trapped air or moisture becomes a stress concentrator that runs cracks later.

When a DIY kit genuinely works

A DIY kit is a reasonable call if all of the following are true:

The prep step almost every DIYer skips

The single most common DIY failure is this: someone puts the bridge over the chip, drops resin in, cures it, and pulls the kit off. What they missed is that the impact point was full of road film and micro-dust the whole time. The resin cured around that contamination instead of bonding to clean glass.

Proper prep looks like this: clean the chip and the area two inches around it with isopropyl alcohol. Use the pick end of a sewing needle or the fine tip from the kit to lightly probe the impact point and dislodge loose glass shards. If the chip has been damp, warm the area with a hair dryer on low for two to three minutes and let it cool before starting. The chip has to be dry, clean, and at roughly the same temperature as the resin.

Even done well, DIY repairs fail in a few consistent ways.

When the DIY math stops working

At about $150 for a professional repair with a warranty against crack propagation, the pro version is not much more expensive than two DIY kits and a Saturday afternoon. The professional advantages are real: a proper vacuum-injection bridge that can pull resin into finer micro-cracks, a resin cabinet that keeps the resin at a consistent viscosity, and — most importantly — insurance-billed pricing that often makes the out-of-pocket cost zero anyway on a California comprehensive policy.

Consumer Reports' own guidance lines up with this — DIY kits are viable for small, fresh, well-placed damage, and pro repair is the safer default beyond that.

The rule

Do not attempt a DIY repair on damage that is any of: within two inches of the windshield edge, over three-quarters of an inch across, in the driver's primary sightline, or more than a couple weeks old with visible dirt inside the chip. In every one of those cases the DIY kit will most likely lock the chip into a non-repairable state and force a full replacement. If any of those apply, skip straight to the cost breakdown and plan for replacement instead.
