If you drive a truck or SUV that came off the line before roughly 2015, or a sedan that predates about 2018, your windshield replacement is genuinely simpler than the process a 2024 luxury car goes through. The difference is a forward-facing camera behind the mirror, and the calibration step that camera forces. Without the camera, there is nothing to calibrate. Without the calibration, the job is what auto glass work looked like for the 40 years before Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) existed: a clean pinch weld, a proper urethane bead, a well-set piece of glass, and a warranty. Here is what goes into that on an older vehicle.
Why 2015 is roughly the pivot
ADAS features — lane departure warning, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking — rely on a camera mounted behind the rearview mirror looking through a specific optical zone of the windshield. Federal regulation phased AEB in as standard equipment across major manufacturers by model years 2017 to 2022, but many automakers voluntarily included forward-facing cameras earlier. Roughly, this means:
- Pre-2015 vehicles: almost never have a forward-facing camera behind the mirror. Windshield replacement requires no camera calibration.
- 2015 to 2018: mixed. Some trims have ADAS cameras; base models often do not. If the rearview mirror has a plastic housing around a lens facing forward, calibration is almost certainly required.
- 2019 and later: almost always have a forward-facing camera. Calibration is nearly always required.

What a good install looks like on an older vehicle
Older cars still have the same requirements as new ones for the structural bond. The AGRSS standard published by the Auto Glass Safety Council applies regardless of vehicle age. A conscientious installer:
- Cuts out the old urethane with a cold knife or fiber line, leaving a thin uniform layer of the previous bead on the pinch weld as a bonding surface for the new urethane.
- Inspects the pinch weld for rust, and treats any pitting with proper primer and urethane sealer before setting new glass. Rust is more common on older Sacramento vehicles than people think — decades of morning dew under a failing molding leaves its mark.
- Uses a high-modulus urethane matched to the vehicle type and lays the bead at the correct height so the glass sits at the correct flush depth against the moldings.
- Reuses OE moldings where possible, replaces them where they have shrunk or cracked, and sets rain sensor pads with the correct optical gel if the vehicle has one.
What older-vehicle installs specifically need attention on
Older trucks and SUVs have quirks a shop should already know:
- Wiper cowl fragility. Twenty-year-old cowl plastic is brittle. Careful removal beats fast removal every time. A cracked cowl clip is a $30 part and an unhappy customer.
- Molding availability. On some 90s and early 2000s trucks the original moldings are no longer produced. Universal molding kits work but the shop should mention the substitution before the day of the job.
- Rust on the pinch weld. Common on any vehicle that has had a previous replacement done sloppily. The correct answer is to treat and prime, not to hide it with urethane and hope.
- Aftermarket options are better than ever. Older common vehicles have deep aftermarket parts catalogs. The downside is that a couple aftermarket brands cut corners on tint band accuracy — an experienced installer knows which brands run true and which do not.
Why calibration-free is not "less work"
On a modern ADAS-equipped car, the calibration step at the end can take longer than the install itself, and it is the one step that differentiates shops. On an older vehicle, that step is gone, but it does not make the work trivial. It shifts the entire quality bar back onto the install itself — the pinch weld prep, the urethane bead, the glass set. There is nowhere to hide.
That is a large part of why older-vehicle work is a specialty: the shops that do it well have been doing it for two decades, know which pinch welds rust and which do not, know which aftermarket brands hold up, and have the patience to replace a brittle cowl clip instead of gluing it back together.
How to check what your vehicle actually needs
Two things to look at before booking:
- Look behind the rearview mirror. If there is a camera lens facing forward, you have ADAS and a calibration is part of the job.
